Companies and products

International Trading was one of the very first businesses of today's Possehl Group. Starting out as an iron ore merchant, in the course of more than a century the company evolved into an international organization trading in a variety of minerals and other raw materials. The division currently includes 9 companies worldwide.

A major share of this business has since 1915 been in the hands of Possehl Erzkontor GmbH, the divisionīs parent company, located in Europe, Asia and USA. The Possehl Erzkontor Group is a leading player in classical raw materials trading. Additionally, its subsidiaries have completed and enlarged consistently the value chain by adding processing services to its trading activities; specific customer and industry applicants are becoming more and more important.

Markets and customers

The European, American, South African, and Asian refractory industries are a major customer of this division, the most important trading products being various grades of bauxite and magnesia. The Possehl companies also deliver their products to the metallurgical and foundry industries. Other destinations for these products are the cement and building materials industries and the chemical and plastics processing sectors, as customers of growing significance.

The international trading operations largely depend on the state of the steel, metallurgical, and other industries. Moreover, as in the steel sector, the refractory manufacturers have for years now been consolidating their capacities. In response to this, the Possehl Erzkontor Group has strengthened its position as specialised supplier with a wide range of products, e.g. by developing new activities beside the refractory section and by constantly enlarging its product line.

The Possehl-Group has emerged from trading with coal and iron goods and has grown up with it.

Upon the way from a local merchant in Lübeck to nowadays´ international trading within an international group Possehl had to take significant steps. Therefore, entrepreneurial visions have been most important as well as coming to the conclusion that prospering economy depends on certain raw materials. In due time, Emil Possehl has found "philosopher´s stone" realising that booming steel industry needed masses of ores. Thus he himself ascended towards a Europe-wide entrepreneur.

Good education, initiative and persistence have been merchant Emil Possehl´s major virtues. And they still are actual granting that Possehl will be in position of good international business opportunities in the future. Today´s international trading division is a reliable supplier of various raw materials and basic chemicals. Possehl digs out treasures - not only from earth.
