Special-Purpose Construction

Companies and products

Possehl's Special-Purpose Construction division operates from a variety of locations in Europe. The parent company is Possehl Spezialbau GmbH, Wiesbaden. For over 45 years now, the division has been making and maintaining high-grade coatings for traffic surfaces and industrial flooring. Of special significance are the cds building protection products used on concrete surfaces for coating, sealing and impregnation purposes.

Special Purpose ConstructionWith its joint technique, micro-surfacing (DSK), and epoxy-resin (EP) grip products, Possehl Spezialbau is in the market for road maintenance, repair and conservation of existing traffic routes. Another major proprietary product is the ANTISKID Surface Treatment applied by Possehl Spezialbau to airport runways at home and abroad for improved take off/landing safety and extended long-evity. The division has come up with a newly developed epoxy-resin coating system with much shorter curing time for reduced shutdown periods during ANTISKID resurfacing work.

Markets and customers

With at present 75 percent public-sector and 25 percent industrial and private customers, Spezialbau Wiesbaden reckons that the former's share will contract further. In fact, up to the 1990s, it was the public sector that accounted for most of business, 90 percent, with the industrial and private sector making up a mere 10 percent. Through this refocused customers structure, Possehl Spezialbau is taking account of the continuing tight budgets of Germany's regional authorities. The same applies to the situation at the Austrian location of Griffen and in the Netherlands.

The recession in the German building and construction sector, persisting since the mid-1990s, has been continuing. According to the Central Association of German Construction Industry, sales continued to decline in 2003 for 6%. In addition, insolvencies in the building sector had a negative impact on sales as well as the hold-back of public orders at the expense of infrastructural construction measures and of repair and maintenance works.

However, Possehl Spezialbau has got two distinguished competitive advantages in these sluggish markets: Internationalization at an early stage as well as continuous specialization. Thus, Possehl Spezialbau has got a good basic position for profitable advancement of its activities in the future.

Facts and backgrounds:

Starting life in Wiesbaden as a child of the post-war years, Possehl´s Special-Purpose Construction division had to specialize right from the beginning. The jet engines of the US Air Force were damaging the concrete and asphalt of runways and taxiways. Possehl Spezialbau had to develop new, fast and reliable means of repair. This "market" was quickly expanded to include activities in the civilian sector too. Airport runways were quickly followed by industrial floors, roads and motorways. And the economic upturn soon led to business beyond Germany´s borders.

These days, Possehl Spezialbau provides its services at the following locations:

Wiesbaden (Germany)

Oosterhout (Netherlands)

Griffen (Austria)

Maribor (Slovenia)

Madrid (Spain)

Jastrebarsko (Croatia)

Minsk (Belarus)
